MED 010 | Most Excellent Invite
I recently posted about iconic events, parties, and places that everyone claims to have been at and MOST EXCELLENT in Manchester was one of them.
But one night it was so quiet that the decks were switched off, a television set came out the back, and everyone sat down to watch the football instead.
Must have been an important game, so I think it was the World Cup, which dates the night to the Summer of 1990. Feels about right. But if someone who was there could corroborate this story, I would be very grateful to know I’m not just imagining it.
I had membership to Most Excellent which was a bit of laminated paper (posh) and this invite is as DIY as it gets printed one colour on bog standard paper probably on a photocopier the king of DIY tools.
On the bill that Thursday, 10th Jan at The State, 6 Whitworth St, Manchester was Andy Weatherall for “Damens Birthday.”
(I don’t remember who “Damen” was but would love to know and lucky Damen).
Maybe it's a bit of a niche post but I thought writing about DJ Harvey would go over most LinkedIn heads but no because that post kicked off (and is still going strong) so I know you’re all out there behind the professional veil of whatever it is we all do now and most of you are telling me how much you’re enjoying these posts so yay.
Another one for the archive: “My Empire of Dirt”.
**UPDATE TO THIS POST** 24/09
THANKS to Hugh Garry for solving the mystery...I was actually at Justin Robertson and Greg Fenton’s "Spice" watching the football, which was the precursor to Justin Robertson's Most Excellent.
It's funny because I knew there was rarely anyone at the night I was thinking of, which was confusing because Most Excellent was well-attended.
It's funny how you remember things; it was a proper screen, not a television set, and the music carried on regardless.
I've still got some Spice bits and pieces somewhere; I'll post them soon.
Thanks again, Gary.
